I view surgery as a last resort. Sometimes there is no supplement, rehab movement or strengthening exercise that will cure tissue damage. Having a torn meniscus in my knee was compromising my day to day functions and this was unacceptable. Getting an arthroscopic meniscectomy was not a life saving mandatory surgery but I saw it as necessary to get on with my life.
Once I was committed to having the surgery, I wanted to do everything in my control to return to my regular life as fast as possible. There is no magic pill to heal faster, but the human body is pretty amazing. If you treat it right, you will be amazed. Here is a list of the basics that you can control after surgery to heal like a superhero.
Heal Like A Superhero
- Control Swelling – The R.I.C.E. method is easy to remember and it will bring down the selling fast. Rest – Ice – Compression – Elevation
- Sleep – The body does it’s best recovering when you are sleeping. Prioritize sleep after surgery and aim for 8-10 hours.
- Nutrition – Eat high quality protein, fats and vegetables and avoid inflammatory carbs like cereal, pasta and cookies.
- Get Moving – As soon as your body is ready, get moving. Exercise bikes or trainers are perfect. The tissue will heal faster with better circulation.
Set Yourself Up for Success
Surgery doesn’t begin the day you walk into the hospital. The process begins long before that. Control what you can control and set yourself up for success.
