Consume Less, Create More

Screen Time

The coronavirus pandemic, the Black Lives Matter movement, the 2020 election, the attack on Capitol Hill; I was obsessed, maybe addicted. I knew it wasn’t healthy. I would get the screen time reports on a weekly basis and I knew something had to change.

I took on a home-improvement project and finished my basement. The end result was a nice upgrade to my pain cave and some quality time spent with my Dad. It felt great to create something but it was only a temporary project and I went back to burying my face in my electronics reading all the ‘expert’ opinions on every topic you can imagine.

No Turning Back

When I got the diagnosis of a torn meniscus in February, it was like all the stars aligned and I felt this purpose to start a YouTube channel.  Without even realizing it, I was breaking this terrible habit of consuming too much media. I found myself brainstorming ideas for the web page, researching recent trends and planning episodes for the channel. I was more energized to work with my athletes, I was more present with my family and with my own thoughts.

I’m now writing this with my channel trailer and first episode ready to launch with a lot of anxiety. Thoughts of will anyone watch or care, will the haters come with their negative comments. My approach is of the mindset of “I don’t care.” I think I need to explain. I’m very conscious of the things I create and do in life, almost to a fault. When I made a decision to go down this path, I knew I couldn’t scrutinize every detail of these posts or the videos and I can also not go back to my old ways of obsessing over negative comments.

If this series of videos can help anyone overcome meniscus surgery to get back to regular life activities or maybe motivate someone to train and complete an Ironman, it’s serving its purpose. In the end, even with zero views it’s making me a better person. If you haven’t taken a minute to check out the trailer, follow the links below.  Thanks for your support!
